here's what i ended up doing:

1. waited overnight and saw that the update did not finish

2. held down the power button for about 10s to force a reboot

3. laptop came up just fine; installed all remaining updates

after the first one (i purchased multiple laptops), i was comfortable forcing the reboot once the progress bar hit the finish line.  while this update is poorly written, at least it is consistent.  all of my new laptops hung just like this, and all survived.

shame on HP and M$ for not testing the update
