(Windows 11) Upon starting my computer, I received an error saying, "SMART Hard Disk Error" (301). However, going to system diagnostics, the hard drive passes both the quick and extensive tests.
Pressing enter to continue startup leads me to "Boot Device Not Found" (3F0). HP support recommended pressing F11 to do HP Recovery, but F11 does nothing, so I am left with this screen.
I have reset load settings to default as recommended, and it still has done nothing. One of the issues discussed is Intel Optane Memory can malfunction and not respond properly, and I will mention that my computer is installed with Intel Optane Memory.

Hi@David305,
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing issues with the HP Laptop not booting up gets SMART Hard Disk Error.
The BIOS can be corrupted during normal operation from a failed BIOS upgrade, or damage from a virus.
Recover the BIOS using a key press combination.
Turn off the computer. Press and hold the Windows + b keys, and continue to press those keys while you press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds. Release the power button, but continue pressing the Windows + b keys.
The power light remains on, and the screen remains blank for about 40 seconds before anything is displayed. You might hear a series of beeps (usually 8 beeps). Eventually, an HP BIOS Update screen is displayed and the BIOS update begins automatically.
NOTE: If the HP BIOS Update screen is not displayed, press and release the power button, and then immediately press the Windows + b keys at the same time, repeatedly, until the computer beeps or opens the HP BIOS Update screen.
After the BIOS is recovered, a Continue Startup button is displayed and a timer counts down. Click the Continue Startup button to restart the computer immediately, or wait for the computer to restart automatically when the timer reaches zero.
Determine if Optane memory is installed and working normally
- Start or restart the computer.
- Press F10 repeatedly during start up to enter the BIOS setup utility.
Look for the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology option.
For American Megatrends BIOS, select System Configuration > Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology.
For InsydeH2O BIOS, select System Configuration > UEFI Device Configuration > Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology.
If Intel Optane is not listed, the computer does not have Optane memory or Optane is malfunctioning and can not be detected. Contact HP Customer Support for further assistance.
If Intel Optane is listed, the computer has Intel Optane memory installed and working normally.
Disable Optane Memory
- Select Intel Optane under Optane Volume:.
- Select Disable.
- Preserve user data: Keep Preserve user data value as “Enabled” or “X” based on different BIOS providers.
- Change the Are you sure you want to disable? value from No to Yes.
- Select Disable for the last step.
- The Optane Volume should no longer be listed and disks will be unbundled showing under Non-RAID Physical Disks.
- Save changes and exit.
The computer should boot into Windows. If it does, jump to Procedure 5: Re-enable Optane Memory.
If it does not load Windows, then perform Recovery on the PC.
The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.
