I have the HP Envy 17. Recently, the laptop started getting stuck in a dead state, where it wouldn't turn on and the charge light wouldn't light up at all (white or orange). Pressing and holding the power button wouldn't do anything either.
The only way to get it to recover was to remove the back cover and disconnect the battery. It would then bootup, charge, and otherwise work normally, but only for a period of time. I can put it to sleep, restart it, charge it, run it on battery or with the power cord plugged in, etc... Charge light shows orange when charging and white when fully charged, as expected.
The problem will eventually return however, and it appears to be related to being powered down for some extended period of time, but I haven't been able to consistently replicate it. Often, I will finish my work at night and then pack the laptop up in my backpack for the next day. But when I get to work and open up the lid on the laptop, it won't turn on...with or without the charger plugged in. Then I have to go through the process of removing the cover, disconnecting the battery, and then it's all good again, until the next time.
Based on some online forum posts of similar problems, I thought maybe the battery was going bad, even though all tests indicated it was fine. I purchased a new battery for it and replaced it. However, the problem was not resolved. I've also tried resolving it by updating to the latest BIOS available, but it did not help.
Also thought I'd mention that when it's "dead", it won't charge from USB-C either. Normally, using either the barrel charger that came with it or using a USB-C charger works. The charge light will indicate orange for charging and white for charged no matter which charger is being used.
