HP ENVY m7 Notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Afternoon everyone.

I have had this ENVY for a number of years.

No issues at all.

Even though my ENVY has 4 USB 3.0 ports, I have always used USB 2.0 flash drives without issues.

Recently I purchased a number of PNY 3.0 flash drives and have been using them, also without issues.

So here's the deal.

I have always used a USB 2.0 flash drive for a Win 10 recovery drive but thought I would create and try a USB 3.0 flash drive for the same purpose.

When I boot my notebook and press F9, I am presented with a list of devices that I can choose to boot from.

If I have the USB 2,0 recovery drive inserted, I "see" it as a device I can select.

BUT, if I have the USB 3.0 recovery drive inserted when I press F9, I don't see the device as one I can select to boot from.

I tried using all 4 USB 3.0 port, but the result is the same.

I have also created recovery drives on a number of different USB 3.0 flash drives and it doesn't make a difference.

The USB 3.0 drive is not shown as a selection to boot from.

Of note:

I CAN use it successfully if I use it on a DELL laptop. (My wife's machine.)

So, I'm thinking there isn't anything wrong with the USB 3,0 flash drive.

But, what do I know from anything.

I'm very confused.

Do you think this ENVY, simply can't use USB 3.0 flash drives to boot from (But USB 2.0 flash drives are okay) ?

Is there a BIOS setting or something that I need to set ?

I have Legacy enabled and secure boot disabled.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

I simply want to use USB 3.0 if I can.

@RayInWisconsin,

USB 3 kicks in only when Windows boots and not until then. The BIOS on your computer doesn't support Legacy USB 3.0 as far as I know.

Hope that answers your question.

@RayInWisconsin,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

Let's start off by updating the Bios, and Chipset drivers on your PC either from our HP support website, using this link or download it using HP Support Assistant.

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day

I thank you for considering my issue AND your suggestions.

I have the latest BIOS update installed.

And, I have all of the latest drivers as shown via the HP support assistant.

And, I have all of the latest Windows 10 updates as well. (Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.239)

But I still continue to experience this very strange issue.

USB 2.0 and 3.0 flash drives work perfectly under the Windows 10 OS.

It's just that the boot device option entries don't show and USB 3.0 flash drive that I have plugged in.

Regardless of the size, manufacturer or how it was created.

(I tried both the Windows 10 recovery drive procedure as well as creating a bootable USB flash drive via RUFUS.)

I'm very confused.

Any additional suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
