CPU: i7-6820HQ CPU @ 2.70GHz,  

GPU: Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 and NVIDIA Quadro M3000M.

BIOS:  N81 Ver. 01.60 - 04/24/2023

Goal:

To boot from USB and install Linux. A pretty standard procedure.

------

Problem:

Inserting any prepared USB thumbdrive that was used on other computers (HP ProBook 4320s, Toshiba Satellite, Clevo, custom desktops with Intel/Gigabyte motherboard) , when booting, the screen remains black.

However, the currently installed Windows 10 still boot up in the background because pressing Fn+F1 put the machine into a sleep state.

Steps:

  1. Computer turned off.
  2. Insert USB thumbdrive.
  3. Turn on computer.
  4. Observe - Black screen
  5. (Verification) - Waiting for 1minute, press Fn+F1
  6. (Verification) Observe - Computer goes to sleep.
  7. Remove USB thumbdrive.
  8. Press power button to wake computer.
  9. Observe - Windows 10 Login screen displayed.

Prepared:

  1. BIOS has secure boot disabled and legacy mode enabled.
  2. Boot order has been configured with USB as 1st boot device.
  3. UEFI was already disabled.

Tried:

  1. Booting from and external USB DVDROM works, but this process is too slow and frequently running into issues that lock the PC.  ( nouveau, fifo: PBDMAO: 00026000 [GPFIFO GPPTR PBPTR] ch 0 ...] )
  2. Tried booting with USB thumbdrives with Arch, Kubuntu, LinuxLite, and LXDE. The black screen is presented in all situations.
  3. Tried booting from different USB ports. The black screen is presented in all situations.
  4. Tried booting from the Thunderbolt ports. The black screen is presented in all situations.
  5. Tried to copy the BIOS configuration to a USB stick, but none of the USB thumbdrives are detected in the BIOS.
  6. Reset BIOS to factory default. The black screen is presented in situation.
