I had really high hopes when I purchased the Zbook as I am a photographer and video maker and the Zbook appeared to be the ideal laptop. Unfortunately the one I received was a lemon and total dud. Just a few months after receiving it, the screen developed vertical lines. I sent it back to HP for repair - after a long and accusatory discussion with an HP tech who accused me of dropping it! It was finally repaired and returned. A couple months later - more issues with the screen display - it was all fuzzy and the color weird. Once again, I sent it back for repair. This time when I received it back from HP, my drive had been formatted - or replaced - and Windows had not been properly installed. I had to reinstall Windows and restore all my files from my back up. After this, every time Microsoft would update Windows, the computer would not longer recognize the USB-C ports. I called for support (this was during the pandemic) and the tech who answered had no interest in helping me. He was on a speaker phone, apparently at home fixing a meal and didn't pay attention to me at all. HIs solution - call Microsoft. I finally gave up on him and found the solution - every time there was an update, I pressed the down volume and power at the same time which apparently resets the bios and that fixed the issue. I also purchased an extended warranty. Now, just 3.5 years after I purchased the Zbook, it was sitting on my desk, plugged into the power supply, but turned off but I felt the heat from the case - it was burning up!! It was so hot I could barely hold it. I unplugged it and fearing that it was going to start a fire - I carried it outside and noticed that the battery charging light was blinking. It finally cooled down, but would not longer boot. I contacted HP and discovered that the extended warranty had expired - but I had never been notified to renew it. I couldn't find anyone here in Florida to fix it and finally had to send it to The Micro Computer Center in Georgia. The tech there indicated that the mother board had to be replaced - for $1500!! This is the most expensive and worse laptop that I have over owned.

Hi @JimFC,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Zbook X2 G4 has overheated, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:
- Allow the laptop to cool down: Turn off your laptop and unplug it from the power source. Wait for at least 30 minutes to allow it to cool down before turning it back on.
- Check the airflow: Make sure the laptop is placed on a flat surface and there is enough space around it for proper airflow. Avoid using the laptop on soft surfaces such as a bed or cushion, as this can block the airflow and cause overheating.
- Clean the air vents: Over time, dust and debris can accumulate on the air vents, which can restrict airflow and cause overheating. Use a can of compressed air or a soft brush to clean the air vents.
- Update the BIOS: HP periodically releases updates for the laptop's BIOS, which can include performance enhancements and bug fixes. Check the HP support website for any available updates and install them.
- Reduce the workload: If you are running multiple programs or tasks simultaneously, this can put a strain on the laptop's hardware and cause overheating. Try closing some programs or reducing the workload to see if that helps.
- Use a cooling pad: If you frequently use your laptop for demanding tasks such as gaming or video editing, consider using a cooling pad to help dissipate heat more effectively.
If none of these solutions work, it's possible that there may be an underlying hardware issue causing the overheating.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your reply - but did you even ready my entire post? This computer was a total lemon from the day I received it and I had nothing but problems with it. I should mention I am a retired senior programmer/analyst and worked with IBM, I know what it takes to keep computers cool. This computer hadn't been turned on in 2 days and it was a fluke I discovered it was so hot. I can't follow any of your suggestions as the motherboard is fried - for some unknown reason some component overheated - on a computer that wasn't even turned on! This was just the final issue with a series of issues with this machine not to mention very poor service from HP when I needed help.
