HP Notebook - 17-by0062cl

I have the same problem as others have had after changing the battery. I have to plug in the charger to get it to power up and get error 502 screen. Here are two things I found in my troubleshooting.

1. The laptop only needs to be plugged in when you push the power button. I would unplug the charger before the error screen would come up and it runs fine on the battery.

2. This one I do not understand. The laptop starts up fine as long as it is not closed. If it is closed than you have to plugin the charger and get the error screen. I have tested this several times and always the same outcome.

The laptop worked fine until battery change.

Hi @JRM72,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the battery replacement may have introduced some power management or BIOS-related issues on your HP Notebook 17. The symptoms you're describing suggest that the laptop is having trouble properly detecting or transitioning between battery and AC power when starting up or when closing the lid. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if possible).
  • Hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the charger (without the battery) and try powering up the laptop again. If it starts, then shut it down and insert the battery and test again.

Update BIOS/Drivers:

  • Sometimes, power management issues can arise after a battery replacement if the BIOS or power management drivers aren't correctly configured for the new battery. Check for any BIOS or driver updates on HP's support site for your specific model. Updating the BIOS can often resolve hardware compatibility issues related to power and battery detection.

Check Battery Settings:

  • Go into the Device Manager and check under "Batteries" to ensure that your battery is being properly recognized. If you see any yellow warning signs, try uninstalling and reinstalling the battery drivers (e.g., Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery).

Re-seat the Battery:

  • If your laptop has a removable battery, try reseating it (remove and reinsert the battery). If it's a non-removable battery, you can perform the same reset by holding the power button for 20-30 seconds after unplugging the device and ensuring all connections are secure.

Test with Another Battery:

  • If possible, try using a different battery (either a new or known good battery). This can help confirm if the new battery itself might be defective.

Check Power Settings in BIOS:

  • Access the BIOS settings (press F10 during startup) and check any settings related to power management or battery behavior, especially with regard to sleep or hibernation modes. Resetting BIOS settings to defaults can sometimes resolve issues caused by incorrect configurations after hardware changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank You for your reply. I did all of these before first post. Did hard reset; checked and reset battery drive; re-seated battery; no other battery to test with. HP support page does not show my operating system (windows 11 home) only windows 10 for my laptop. Did not mess with bios power settings because bios not supporting windows 11 home.
