So my laptop all of a sudden had a black screen and the capslock button was blinking. I was confused since it was working the day before. The blinking pattern is 3 long blinks and two short blinks. I'm not sure how to fix this issue it's been like this for a while. I'm pretty sure the laptop is a windows 10.

This seems to be a memory failure which possibly can be fixed

 

Most memory problems can be solved by good cleaning.

I am guessing your system is more than a few years old. You may have purchase additional memory and when you inserted the memory in you probably compacted a lot of dust that had accumulated in the socket over time.

You need to remove all the memory chips and clean the motherboard as best you can with an air duster. You should take some caution to avoid static discharge when removing the memory sticks.


On a laptop, remove cover plate to get access to the memory. If there is no cover plate then search YouTube for a disassembly video.



First blow out as much dust as you can before removing the memory. Once motherboard area is clean, then discharge static electricity by touching a finger to metal frame or case before removing memory sticks.

Clean the memory contacts with eraser, use air duster, reseat memory. Reseat one at a time if necessary to find the bad one.

When powering up the system, be sure to go into the BIOS setup and press F9 or whatever function key is the default. Disable any overclocking and set all speeds to auto.

Run UEFI diagnostics.

Make sure you have the latest UEFI diagnostics.

HP releases newer UEFI diagnostics periodically.
When you select F2 during boot you are requesting UEFI diagnostics.
There is an updated diagnostics package Click Here
Look for the phrase 'issues outside the OS',
Expand the'+'symbol and click the DOWNLOAD button.
The version of the UEFI diagnostics is shown at the left of that DOWNLOAD button.
When you press F2 to run diagnostics please ensure the version is the new one.



This can be installed from a USB flash drive if necessary.

Check to see if there is a hardware problem.

Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.

If a component fails during the UEFI test it is a hardware problem. Failures due to stress can be fixed by possibly downclocking the CPU and the memory.
