It's not about the brand, it's about the operating system. Most such issues are software caused.
OK, I will assume your hard disk drive is well seated.
Please, perform basic hardware checks (F2) as per these instructions here >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA
Do a quick check of components. If these do not exist and basic tests load, make sure you test your HDD and your RAM (memory).
Let me know the results.
If the tests pass without issues, continue by reinstalling Windows. The issue will be confirmed as a software problem.
Your PC comes with Windows 10 preinstalled (Win 10 OEM).
Here are instructions how to clean install/reinstall Windows 10:
Video reference >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAvFm52IjI4
Windows reinstallation / clean installation :
- You can directly download Windows 10 ISO from MS site or download >> Media creation tool from Microsoft site, create installation DVD or installation USB and proceed with clean installation/reinstallation.
Download:
Make sure you select the proper version (64 bit / Home or Pro) if asked.
Media Creation tool will always provide you with the latest Windows version/build - now 1709 Fall Creators Update.
- When download completes, you will need to write the ISO image and boot from a bootable media. You will need a blank USB pendrive (min 8 GB capacity). Use the Media Creation tool.
When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:
Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.
Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously
Power on the PC.
As soon as you press the power-on button, start hitting the Esc button repeatedly (like tap-tap-tap).
This should open a HP Startup Menu
Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as a boot option.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10. Perform clean installation/custom installation (not repair).
Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on Disc 0 Unallocated space
- After successful Windows installation, install drivers taken from HP web site or via Windows Update/Device Manager >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139
- Make sure Windows is Activated by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Activation
- You might want to stop some of the Windows Telemetry by using free tools such as Spybot AntiBeacon or DWS Lite
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes

Hi @Btterfly
Welcome to the HP Support forum.
You get this message because either of these:
- Computer's BIOS is not configured correctly and it tries to boot from a device (not standard HDD) that has no bootable stuff on it (e.g. empty USB pen drive)
- There is no HDD/SSD/storage drive present in the PC
- HDD/SSD is present but corrupted (or some connector is not working)
- Operating system (e.g. Windows) is totally corrupted/unbootable
You can review the official HP article about such issues > http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443463
Please, follow all the steps in the article and let me know in details how it goes.
Looking forward to your reply.

I have tried steps 1-3 it did not help. I could not do step 4 which was Reseat the hard drive. I finally found a video on how to do it and I would have to take this particular Laptop apart to get to the hard drive, I do not have the ability to do that. I tried step 5 which was Preform an HP System Recovery and I could not get my laptop to work hitting the F11 key to bring up a menu to choose from.
It is looking like this laptop can not be repaired, at least by me. I still have no idea how it happened, it was only a year old. L. Might be time to try a different brand.
Thank you for trying to help.
