Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Access the BIOS/UEFI Settings
- Turn off your laptop completely.
- Power it on and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly (about once every second).
- After pressing Esc, a menu should appear. Select F10 to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings.
If F10 doesn’t work, try pressing F2 or F12 (depending on the model) to access the BIOS.
Disable Internal Drive (If Needed)
- Once in the BIOS/UEFI menu, navigate to the System Configuration or Advanced tab.
- Look for an option like Storage or SATA Configuration.
- Find your internal drive listed under "Hard Drive" or "Storage Devices."
- Disable the internal drive by changing the setting from Enabled to Disabled (if available).
- Save and Exit the BIOS by pressing F10, then choose Yes to confirm saving changes.
This should allow your portable SSD to be detected.
Set Boot Priority (If Using SSD as Boot Drive)
If you want to boot from your portable SSD:
- In BIOS/UEFI, find the Boot Options or Boot Order menu.
- Set your portable SSD as the first boot device.
- Save the changes and exit.
Check SSD Compatibility and USB Port
- Ensure your portable SSD is connected properly to a USB 3.0/3.1 port for optimal performance.
- Verify that the portable SSD is working on another system to rule out any issues with the drive itself.

Use HP Support Assistant
If you still have issues, the HP Support Assistant tool can help you with driver and system updates, ensuring everything is compatible with external devices like your SSD.
Update BIOS/UEFI Firmware (If Necessary)
Sometimes, BIOS/UEFI updates can resolve compatibility issues with external drives:
- Visit the HP support website.
- Look up your model number: HP Notebook 17-ca1003cy.
- Download the latest BIOS update and follow the instructions on the page to update your system.
Use Disk Management (If SSD Shows but Can't Be Accessed)
If your portable SSD is recognized but you can't access it:
- Right-click the Start menu and select Disk Management.
- If the SSD shows up as unallocated space, you can right-click and create a new volume or partition.
- Format it accordingly to use it properly.
Test Different USB Cable and Port
Sometimes, a faulty USB cable or port can prevent detection:
- Try a different USB cable if possible.
- Test other USB ports on your laptop, especially if they support higher speeds (USB 3.0 or USB 3.1).
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
