OMEN by HP Transcend 16 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-u0000 (765S0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello

I recently bought an HP Omen Transcend 16 with a single SSD drive slot with a 512 GB SSD. So, I bought a 2Tb SSD and cloned the original SSD into the new 2Tb SSD.

When I installed the new SSD and turned on the laptop, power light came on but nothing came up on the screen for a few minutes, and then I saw an error message saying 'cmos checksum is invalid'. I thought I made a mistake while the hardware installation, however when I put the original SSD back, the laptop opened fine and loaded Windows 11 successfully.

So, I think this issue has got something to do with cloning. The laptop does not see the new SSD as authentic.

Since the laptop has only 1 SSD slot, I need to upgrade. Can you please help me?

KR,

mecaniq

Dear @BeemerBiker,

Thank you for all the questions.

I used Macrium Reflect v8 for the cloning.

That should work  I have not used it but it is recommended everywhere.  You should clone with the option to adjust to fill the enter 2tb proportionally.  Do not create any extra partitions as HP keeps backup BIOS in one of the partitions and it needs to be carried  over to the new drive.  Let the cloning tool adjust the partition sizes to fill the 2tb disk.

Can you get into the bios?

Typical all you need to do is to press F10 to save the new configuration.  You may need to clear the TPM keys since you have a new drive.

On most systems, adding memory causes the same problem and is solved the same way.

If you cannot get into BIOS or boot Windows then a problem.

I was able to get into the BIOS after the CMOS error message. (but it does not load Win11)

Can you elaborate -step by step- on what I need to do after I get into the BIOS?

Sorry, I am not an expert in this area.

Hi,

Why not create a USB drive with Cloud recovery tool and install the system fresh

Hope it helps,

A reinstall of factory software using the cloud recovery as suggested by @iomare should work.

Locate your exact  Product ID

Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 32gb flash.
It make take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.

If you do not have cloud recover then the clone of the original drive should have worked.

What cloning software did you use?

How did you do the cloning?

If you get a SanDisk or Western Digital NVME then you can download their cloning software which is Acronis licensed. Possibly other vendors have or can recommend free cloning software. I use Acronis as I have a license for True Image.

Did you have the original NVME in the laptop, used a USB3 adapter for the new NVME and then booted or ran the cloning software?

Something went wrong or it should have worked.  What error message are you seeing?  When in the BIOS you should see "Windows boot manager" for the boot drive.

Dear @BeemerBiker,

Thank you for all the questions.

I used Macrium Reflect v8 for the cloning.

'Did you have the original NVME in the laptop, used a USB3 adapter for the new NVME, and then booted or ran the cloning software' --> I followed exactly these steps for the cloning. The Windows partition was the first partition (C:)

And I don't know if it makes a difference, but I also copied another 1 TB of my data into the new 2TB NVME as a second partition.

Reading your message I understand the cloning did not work as I intended. So, before the cloud recovery, I will try to have a proper cloning of the original drive. The new 2TB NVME is WD SN770, so I will try Western Digital Acronis this time.

I used Acronis True Image and stuck to your reco about no partition and it worked. Thank you!

I am glad it worked for you.

I  purchased Acronis True Image when it came out back in  2003.  They recently renamed themselves Acronis Cyber Protect and I would not buy their product again.  Their only good offering was the True Image backup that did cloning and backup.
