Hi @seekers

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Your HP PC is experiencing a hard disk failure, as indicated by the "Boot Device Not Found (3F0)" message. Additionally, the hard disk is making noise when you turn on the PC. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and address this issue:

Steps to Address "Boot Device Not Found (3F0)" Error and Noisy Hard Drive

Verify BIOS Settings for Secure Boot:

  • Restart your computer.
  • Enter BIOS Setup by pressing F10 during startup.
  • Ensure that Secure Boot is enabled. Secure Boot prevents legacy boot devices from starting the computer, including bootable CDs and DVDs.
  • Set BIOS Boot Mode in Boot Option appropriately (UEFI Native for Windows 8 or later).

Reset BIOS to Default:

  • After entering BIOS Setup (F10), reset the BIOS settings to default by selecting the appropriate option.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off your computer completely.
  • Disconnect the power supply and remove the battery (if it is removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge.

Verify Hard Drive and Cable Connection:

  • Ensure that the hard drive and its flex cable are properly connected.
  • Reseat the hard drive and cable connections to ensure they are secure.
  • For multiple storage devices, keep only the primary drive with the operating system.

Test Hard Drive Using HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to verify the hard drive's functionality:
    • Restart your computer and press F2 during startup to enter diagnostics mode.
    • Select "Component Tests" and choose the "Hard Drive" test.

Replace Hard Drive if Diagnostics Test Fails:

  • If the diagnostics tool reports a failure, record the failure code and contact HP support for instructions on ordering a replacement hard drive.

Check for Noisy Hard Drive:

  • Noises such as loud or clicking sounds may indicate a failing hard drive.
  • Remove all peripherals and isolate the hard drive to verify the noise.
  • Test the hard drive on a verified working computer to ensure that the noises are either normal or indicative of a fault.
  • Reseat the original hard drive connection and flex cable.

Update BIOS and Hard Drive Firmware:

  • Ensure BIOS and hard drive firmware are updated to the latest versions.

Perform Disk Defragmentation (Not for SSD):

  • For optimal performance improvement, perform disk defragmentation to consolidate fragmented data on a hard drive.
  • Do not defragment an SSD as it does not improve performance and might wear out the drive prematurely.

Reinstall Operating System if No Errors are Found:

  • If diagnostics report no errors, reinstall the operating system using HP Restore.
