Laptop has burned smell coming from it.  I was using it and the screen went blank and system shut down.  I tried to start it nothing happened.  I plugged it in to the charger and the I get a steady light.  When I try to power on the power on button blinks. then where the charger plugs in I get 4 steady blinks.  System still wont turn on and the battery is not removably.

From your description, it certainly sounds like something got "fried" (to use the Techincal term), most likely due to overheating!

The problem is that we HERE, have no way of diagnosing or repairing hardware problems.

If your PC is still under the original one-year HP warranty, or if you have purchased an extended warranty from HP and this is still valid, then you should contact HP Customer Support to see about having it repaired or replaced under warranty.

If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

NOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!
If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (800) 474-6836

If your PC is no longer under warranty, you will have to contact an HP Repair or Service Center to see if they can examine the PC to determine the cause(s) of the problems, if it can be repaired, and an estimate of the repair costs.

If you live in the U.S., here is a link to the HP Service Repair Centers:

If you live outside the U.S., here is a link to HP Service Centers, by Country/Region: https://support.hp.com/in-en/service-center

Good Luck

Yes I took off the back and it appears the battery caught fire.  It is no longer under warranty, and although there was a recall it is not showing as one that was recalled.  Any suggestions.  I have not dropped it, moved it, or spilled anything on it.  It was working fine and then basically blew up.

If you can get a battery for $40 USD or so, it might be worth a try just to see if the PC will work, again.

That said, the burnt battery implies a problem with the charging curcuit inside the PC. So, even if you replace the battery and the PC then works, there is no guarantee that this will not happen again.

I believe this battery was under a recall or at least should be.  Nevertheless, this was the first and last time I will buy an HP.   I personally refuse to do business with companies that are so unreachable the consumer gives up.  If more people were like me maybe support would not be an endless time loop of frustration.
