HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg2000 (4U8D6AV)

My laptop's power button, which is part of the keyboard, is acting up. Sometimes it works, but other times it doesn’t, and it's really frustrating. The funny thing is, I hardly use the power button since I usually put my laptop in sleep mode. So, I’m puzzled as to why it’s malfunctioning suddenly. I even ran a BIOS update, but it didn’t help. My laptop’s battery is functioning perfectly.

Hi @Im_Blue

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a potentially frustrating issue. If your laptop’s power button (which is part of the keyboard) is malfunctioning intermittently, here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to try and resolve the issue:

1. Check for Keyboard or Power Button Software/Driver Issues

  • Sometimes, issues with the keyboard or power button can be related to drivers or software settings. Ensure that your keyboard drivers are up to date.
  • You can go to Device Manager (on Windows), locate Keyboards, and right-click to update the drivers.
  • Similarly, check if any power-related settings need to be adjusted in the Power Options or System Settings.

2. Reset Power Settings

  • Resetting your laptop's power settings can help resolve issues related to the power button or power modes.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings, and then set it to Restore default settings for this plan.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

  • A hard reset can sometimes clear out minor glitches. To do this:
    • Shut down the laptop.
    • Unplug the power cable (if it's plugged in).
    • Remove the battery (if it's removable).
    • Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds to drain residual power.
    • Reconnect the battery, plug in the power cable, and try turning on the laptop again.

4. Test the Power Button Directly

  • If the power button continues to malfunction, there might be an issue with the button itself (physical wear or internal issue). In this case, you might want to test the button functionality by:
    • Using a keyboard shortcut to shut down or sleep (e.g., Alt + F4 to shut down Windows, or Windows + X > Shutdown).
    • If these shortcuts work reliably, it further points to a possible physical problem with the power button itself.

5. Check for Hardware Issues (Keyboard or Button)

  • Since the power button is part of the keyboard, it’s possible that there’s a hardware issue with the keyboard itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
