I am not sure what went wrong but recently over the past week, my laptop has crashed frequently as soon as I turn it on, doesn't matter windows or a game, it will crash within 5 minutes. I haven't done anything different or downloaded anything new, its why I am so confused as to what happened. Its the blue crash screen and then completely off. Please help. Thank you

Hi @MO1871

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m very sorry to hear about the repeated crashes you’re experiencing. I understand how frustrating it must be when your laptop shuts down within minutes of starting up.

Thank you for sharing the details about what you’ve already observed—it helps narrow down the possible causes.

Here are some structured steps you can follow to diagnose and stabilize the system:

Step 1: Power Reset

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery if it’s removable.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and adapter, then power on.

Step 2: Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and immediately press F2 (or Esc + F2) to enter the diagnostics screen.
  • Run the System Test (including memory and hard drive checks).
  • Allow the test to complete and note any error codes.

Step 3: Safe Mode Boot

  • Power on and press F8 or hold Shift + Restart to access Advanced Startup.
  • Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Safe Mode.
  • If the laptop runs longer in Safe Mode, the issue may be driver or software related.

Step 4: Update Drivers and BIOS

  • Open the HP App on your laptop.
  • Check for updates under My devices > Updates.
  • Install all available driver and BIOS updates.

Step 5: Windows Recovery Options

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Use System Restore to roll back to a point before the crashes began.
  • If restore points are unavailable, consider Reset this PC (keeping files if possible).

Step 6: Thermal and Hardware Check

  • Ensure the laptop is placed on a hard surface with clear ventilation.
  • Listen for abnormal fan noise or excessive heat within the first few minutes.
  • If overheating is suspected, clean vents with compressed air.

If the crashes persist after these steps, it may point to a deeper hardware fault such as failing memory or storage. Running the diagnostics in Step 2 will help confirm that.
