@wendixz, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like your HP Pavilion Laptop PC is having a hardware-related issue, possibly related to overheating, a loose internal connection, or a power issue. Here's a breakdown of the potential causes and solutions:

Overheating

  • Cause: If your laptop shuts off when pressure is applied, it could be because of overheating. The internal fans or heatsinks might be obstructed, or the thermal paste might have degraded.
  • Solution: Make sure the cooling system is working correctly:
    • Check airflow: Ensure that the laptop vents aren't clogged with dust.
    • Clean the fan: You can use compressed air to blow dust out of the fan and vents.
    • Monitor temperatures: Download software like HWMonitor to keep track of temperatures while the laptop is running.

Loose Internal Connection or Short

  • Cause: If applying pressure on the palm rest side causes the laptop to shut down, there could be a loose internal component or a short, like a cable coming loose, especially near the motherboard or battery area.
  • Solution:
    • Open the back cover (if you are comfortable with it) and check for loose connections, especially near the battery and power connections. Disconnect and reconnect cables to ensure they're firmly in place.
    • If you don’t feel comfortable opening your laptop, take it to a professional to have the internal components checked.

Battery Issues

  • Cause: A failing or loose battery could also cause sudden shutdowns, especially if pressure affects the power supply connection.
  • Solution:
    • Remove the battery (if removable) and run the laptop just on AC power. See if the issue persists.
    • If the laptop works fine on AC power, you may need to replace the battery.

Power Supply or Motherboard Issues

  • Cause: A faulty power connector or motherboard problem could lead to an unstable power supply, causing shutdowns when there's pressure on the device.
  • Solution:
    • Check the power adapter: Make sure your charging cable is functioning correctly and providing stable power.
    • If your laptop continues to shut off even with an adapter plugged in, the motherboard might need a repair or replacement.

Software or Firmware Glitch

  • Cause: Sometimes, a malfunctioning driver, BIOS issue, or operating system conflict can cause the system to behave erratically.
  • Solution:
    • Update BIOS and drivers: Go to HP’s official website and check for any BIOS updates or critical driver updates for your laptop model.
    • Reinstall Windows: As a last resort, reinstalling Windows might help, but it seems less likely the main cause if pressure on the palm rest affects it.

HP Diagnostics Tool

  • Use HP's built-in diagnostics tool to run hardware tests to check for any faults:
    • Shut down the laptop.
    • Press ESC repeatedly as soon as the laptop starts to boot.
    • Then, select F2 for diagnostics and run the tests to check for hardware issues.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue
