I wanted to update my laptop with chromium. That in itself was not a problem. in order to boot chromium from USB in order to install it on my hard drive, i jumped into the bios  : Esc->f10. I disabled secure boot and enabled legacy boot. On subsequent reboot, i installed chromium on my HDD.  Now that the system is ready,   I want to my laptop to boot chromium automatically.  If disable legacy boot and enabled secure boot, the system does not come up. If I enable legacy boot  the system still does not come up. I need to do Esc->f9 and then select HDD from the menu. The the system boots up into chromium fine. The HDD option i s the last among 3. the first 3 have something like "EFI .."

Is there a way to automatically boot from HDD now on powercycle so without me having to manually go thru Esc->F9 and selecting HDD.

thanks

Sushil

Hi

If you have a specific need of Chromium then use Chromium.

If you want a fast booting lightweight OS then Lubuntu using secure boot.

However if it has a boot loader it may just want elevating.

But like the OS I am lite on specifics.

thanks for the response & appreciate your time on this. However I am not sure this answers my query. In my case,  I have installed Chromium . The issue is that on a  powercycle of the laptop, laptop does not automatically boot from disk. It is a brick. In order for the laptop to boot, on a power cycle, i need to press ESC ->F9 and select my hard drive to boot from. Once that is selected, the system comes up fine. I have attached 2 images. The first is the option I see after selecting the sequence: ESC->F9. The options on display are

EFI Hard Drive...

Boot from EFI file

Notebook Hard drive..

I select the last (Notebook Hard Drive ) option and the system comes up fine.

The second images the screen from ESC->F10->Boot options. I  disabled "secure boot" and enabled "Legacy boot" because as I understand, secure boot implies  boot from the UEFI boot order. This fails. The Legacy boot has "NoteBook Hard Drive" as the first option, still the system does not autoboot from "Notebook Hard Drive".  IMG_20180812_104051996.jpgIMG_20180812_104355790.jpg

Hi

Try F5 and F6 to re-order the Boot Manager.

FROM                                                                                   To

EFI Hard Drive...                                                               Notebook Hard drive..

Boot from EFI file                                                            Boot from EFI file

Notebook Hard drive..                                                   EFI Hard Drive...

Then F10 to Save and Exit.

Hi

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I am not that works.  In the second image i sent across, I did change the boot options for the legacy mode such that "boot from hard drive" is the first option. Note that in the boot options ordering there is no choice of "EFI...". But on reboot, i see the first 2 options are related to "EFI..." and the last one (which i want to be the first choice) is "Notebook Hard Drive". There is no key in this screen (first image i sent across) to change the order. I can use the arrow keys  to select "Notebook Hard Drive" but that's it.  Where  is the 2 options  for "EFI..." coming from. I dont see this the Boot options menu.

Typo in my earlier email. I mean to say -"Unfortunately I am not sure that works"

Hi

I dont have a clue what you are talking about.

You posted 2 pictures.

In my screenshot it clearly states to use the F5 and F6 keys and then F10.

You gave the Boot order in the text, that I copied and pasted.

I have several entries in my boot Manager and re-order them to have OpenSUSE boot first.

So I cannot help any further.

BYE.
