Hi
There is a lould fan niose when starting up my ENVY TouchSmart 14 Sleekbook, the noise lasts about 5 seconds, then the laptop automatically shuts down and never starts the operating system. From pressing the power botton to shutdown, it takes about 10 seconds.
The problem happened from yesterday evening when I was watching a movie on TV, the movie is casted from my laptop via Chromecast. I thought the laptop would become hot after a while, so I sat the laptop on its left edge (obviously not a normal position). Suddenly, the screen went off and it started to shut down. I though it was because the battery power was going to run out, so I plugged in the power adapter and try to wake up the laptop with pressing the power button, but since then the problem's started and keeps happen.
Please help solve the problem, thanks!

This is normal. At power-on, the fan initially runs at 100% speed, until the motherboard measures the temperature inside the computer, and then determines that there is no need for that speed, given the current "cool" temperature, and the motherboard then tells the fan to slow down, and thus make less noise.

Obviously, this is not normal.

Where are the exhaust vents, where the warm air is pushed out?
On my LENOVO laptop, the vent is on the LEFT EDGE.
If your laptop is similar, you may have blocked the exhaust vent, and have caused overheating.
I don't know why your laptop, after cooling-down, will not start.
If the computer's warranty is still valid, contact HP Support.
If the warranty has expired, take the computer to a qualified computer technician, for professional trouble-shooting.

Thanks for your reply, mdklassen
The vents are right below the fan and RAMs, and also on the front edge. The laptop is not overheated now since it has not been working for a whole day
I have tried what I can today, including 1) blow away all the dust, 2) pull out the RAMs, fan, battery, hard drive out and plug into the mother borad again, 3) use the fan, hard drive, and RAM of my another laptop. Nothing good happens.
However, I managed to get into the BIOS and system hardware test menu, and the laptop surprisingly does NOT automatically shut down but the fan noise keeps loud never stops. I have done a quick system test, showing no error on any hardware. Now I am running an extensice test to see if there is any hardware is broken down.
Unfortunately the laptop is out of warranty, otherwise I will send it to the cumstom service directly. I do not know what to do next if the system test result is positive before I resort to a professional.

I find it unusual that an EXHAUST vent is located on the front, but, hey, who knows ?!
Your computer: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/product/hp-envy-touchsmart-14-k000-sleekbook/5375380/manuals
but, today, HP's web-site is listed as "under maintenance", and is extremely slow to respond.
So, I cannot access its "user guides" to get pictures of the intake/exhaust vents.

HP PCs - No Power or No Boot Guided Troubleshooter
Perform a clear CMOS (Notebooks)
For notebook computers introduced after 2016, follow these steps to reset computer CMOS data.
Go to HP Customer Support to review the service or user guide for your PC for specific instructions.
NOTE: Notebook computers produced before April 2016 might require temporary removal of the CMOS Real Time clock battery and primary battery to reset. Refer to the unit service documentation to find this, or continue troubleshooting the issue in this guide.
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Press and hold the Windows and the V keys.
3. While still pressing those keys, press and hold down the Power button on the computer for 2-3 seconds.
4. Release all the keys.
5. At the completion of a successful CMOS reset, a CMOS Reset (502) message displays.
6. Restart the computer. If the symptoms persist and the computer does not start after the CMOS reset, continue troubleshooting the issue.

thanks for the advices
I managed to reset CMOS successfully, since I saw the CMOS Reset (502) message on the display. And I also updated BIOS. Sadly, neither helps startup the operating system. I followed every steps of the 'No Power or No Boot Guided Troubleshooter' until it suggests me to 'service the product'. Now I am trying to retrive my data stored in the hard drive, at least get something back ...

yes, the HP logo shows up if I do not press any key, but after 2 to 3 seconds, it powers off. If I press ESC, the startup menu comes up (pls see the figure), and it is very strange to me that under the startup menu, if I do not press any key, it will not power off. and if I press F2 or F10 to go into system diagnotics or BIOS setup, it also does not powers off.
what is the essential difference between entering startup (press ENTER key) and entering system diagnotics/BIOS setup (press F2/F10)?

Let me know,

I understand that if you do NOT allow it to try to load Windows, it will not power-off.

Pressing ENTER "works" the computer very hard, to load Windows. Does it successfully complete that task?
Pressing F2 launches the built-in HP Diagnostics, to "test" the components of your hardware.
Pressing F10 enters BIOS SETUP, where you can see details about your computer, change options, and change the boot-order, and much more.

that is right, it automatically power off only if the HP logo appears, which happens when I try to load the operating system (the laptop actually have both MINT 17 and Win 8.1) and system recovery (press F11), can I assume that the problem is related to the operating system, either loading or recovering it?
Given that the computer does not power off in some cases like system diagnostics and BIOS setup, can I assume the hardware compnents including the mother board? Also, I tried to test almost every hardware component expect the motherboard (memory, battery, hard drive, fan, wifi adapter, card reader) by remove them to see if the problem still happens.
