Hi @CassieSky,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP computer. The "Preparing Automatic Repair" loop and a failing Hard Drive Short DST Check can indicate a problem with your computer's hard drive. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.
Backup Your Data: Before attempting any fixes, it's important to back up your important data if you haven't already. You can do this by connecting the hard drive to another computer if possible or by using data recovery software.
Check Hardware Connections:
- Ensure that all cables and connections between your hard drive and motherboard are secure. Sometimes, loose connections can cause issues.
- If your computer has an external hard drive, make sure it's properly connected.
Boot into Safe Mode:
- Try booting your computer into Safe Mode. To do this, restart your computer and repeatedly press the F8 key (or another key depending on your HP model) before Windows starts loading. From there, you can access troubleshooting options.
Use Windows Startup Repair:
- While in the Advanced Boot Options menu (accessed through Safe Mode), choose "Startup Repair" to attempt automatic repair of any issues preventing your computer from booting.
Check for Malware:
- It's possible that malware could be causing the issue. Run a full system scan with your antivirus software if you can access Safe Mode.
Run CHKDSK:
- If you can access Safe Mode, open a Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command chkdsk /f /r to check and repair disk errors. This command can take some time to complete.
Test the Hard Drive:
- Since you mentioned the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed, it's likely your hard drive is the problem. You may need to replace it. Contact HP support or visit an authorized service center for assistance.
Reinstall Windows:
- As a last resort, if the hard drive is beyond repair, you may need to reinstall Windows on a new hard drive. Make sure to have a Windows installation USB or DVD and a valid product key ready.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
