Hi @daddyowner1
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're locked out of your HP 17 Laptop (17-cp2000) after an update and your PIN is not working, it could be due to a few reasons such as a corrupted update, issues with Windows login settings, or conflicts caused by the update itself. Here's how you can troubleshoot and regain access:
1. Try Signing in with Your Microsoft Account (If Applicable)
If you’ve been using a Microsoft account to sign in, you should be able to bypass the PIN and log in with your password instead.
- On the login screen, select Sign-in options below the PIN field.
- Choose Password and enter your Microsoft account password.
- If successful, you should be able to access your laptop.
2. Reset the PIN
If the PIN isn't working, you can try to reset it (assuming you can sign in via password or another method):
- On the login screen, click I forgot my PIN.
- You will be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft account password.
- Once signed in, follow the prompts to reset your PIN.
3. Use Safe Mode to Troubleshoot
Sometimes, a failed update can cause login issues. Booting into Safe Mode may allow you to troubleshoot and fix the problem:
To enter Safe Mode:
Force a Restart:
- Press and hold the Power button until the laptop shuts down completely (do this 3 times).
On the 4th restart, Windows will boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
Once your computer restarts, press F4 (or 4) to boot into Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, you can try resetting the PIN or performing a system restore.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
