hp all in one 200-5040am
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My computer is HP All-in-one 200-5040a-m Desktop PC, Windows 10.

My PC will not boot normally.  When I use the recovery disc, built in recovery, or USB stick it gets to the windows screen with the Windows logo then shuts down.

I have made a bootable USB stick on another computer and tried it in two other computers, and it starts on both computers.

By using a combination of keys I was able to start in Safe Mode.  I was able to go to command prompt and list files on my C: hard drive and 😧 partition where the recovery files are.At one stage I got a message 'bad or corrupt boot manager'.Although the computer is over 10 years old, it was working fine until recently. I would appreciate any suggestions.Henry

@Imadriver

This issue is often due to a failing drive. So, let's check that first, because if it is failing, it would need to be replaced and there is no point then in doing anything else until we confirm that.

If your PC is new enough to support UEFI, you can use these steps to test the hard drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024

If not, to check the drive you have to follow these steps:
1) Press Esc key repeatedly, several times a second, while rebooting the laptop. Do NOT hold the key down, just press it over and over.
2) Eventually, you will see an HP Startup Menu
3) Press the Function key for testing the hard drive (usually F2) and let it run.
If the drive checks out OK, then report that and I can provide you options for reinstalling Windows on your PC.

Thank you for your quick response.

My computer is over 10 years old and started to misbehave about three years ago so I bought a new HP all in one computer.  I suspected at the time that the hard drive was on the way out, as I had to use the recovery tools sometimes and there was a rattling sound occasionally.

After trying a hard drive from another laptop and remembering that it was very slow with photos, I was not satisfied, so removed the covers and found that the BIOS battery container was no longer connected to the motherboard at one end, and not having any other diagnostic tools, it was at this stage that I decided that I have spent enough time trying to repair the old pc.

If I bought a new SSD and managed to get it going again who knows how long before something else goes wrong.

Once again thanks for the advice

Henry
