Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

Hi guys,

My notebook wont boot and factory reset doesnt work. I tried to run diagnostic and it says my disk is dead, so I would like to buy a new disk, but the problem is how to get the windows key ?

I have the disk connected to my PC and backuped all my data, but unfortunately there is no windows key as it is OEM version. Can you please advise me how to back up the OEM activator ?

I can see that there is a partition for recovery Image and HP tools. But the recovery image folder is way too big.. over 11gb of data so i wont be able to put it on DVD.

Thank you for help.

That is actually good advice. Odds are it came with Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.

But it is not all gloom and doom. Since it is a Probook HP actually makes a restore disk downloadable from the cloud.

You download a 3.3 meg file and run it and it will walk you through getting an .iso and making it into a recovery disk.

I wish HP would do this for consumer models but the bandwidth cost would be staggering. Many times fewer Probooks out there than Pavilions and Envys.

Just look under Software-Restore CD.

For Windows 8 the activation Code is embedded in the BIOS so if you install from an OEM disk of exactly the correct version (8/8.1, Pro/Home, 64/32) the installation will automatically, magically activate without your having to enter a Key Code.

The trick is finding OEM media for Windows 8.

Thank you for the answer. So I will just buy a new disk and find the right windows version on the internet. Do you have any tips where I can download OEM version of windows ? And is there any possibility to find the exact version of windows what was installed ? I have full access to the disk via my desktop PC, but I am not 100% sure if I had 32 or 64bit version.

Thank you.
