Hi  @TheFamousWeasel,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern about  experiencing  random lockups with the EX101 error code, don’t worry let me help you with this.

Could you please share the exact HP model number of your device ?

Also kindly confirm the below details :

When the lockups occur, are you usually running heavy applications (gaming, video editing) or does it also happen during light use?

Kindly find the below steps you can try :

1.Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware or chipset drivers often trigger EX101 lockups.

Visit HP Support https://support.hp.com/  - Drivers & Downloads -Enter your model

Download and install the latest BIOS update

Install the latest chipset/system drivers

Restart your system after updates

02.Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This checks for hardware faults that may cause lockups.

Press Esc repeatedly at startup -F2 for Diagnostics

Run System Extensive Test

Pay attention to CPU, memory, and storage results

Note any error codes and share them with support

3.Check Windows Event Viewer

Event logs can reveal driver or hardware conflicts.

Press Win + X -Event Viewer -Windows Logs -System

Look for critical errors around the time of lockups

Note if they reference drivers, hardware, or kernel issues

4.Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can sometimes cause instability after updates.

Go to Control Panel -Power Options -Choose what power buttons do

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable

Uncheck Turn on fast startup

Save changes and restart

5.Test in Safe Mode

Safe Mode helps confirm if third-party drivers are involved.

Press Shift + Restart -Troubleshoot -Advanced Options -Startup Settings -Safe Mode

Run the system in Safe Mode for a while

If lockups don’t occur, a driver or app may be the cause

If the issue persists after these steps, please share the model number .

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
