Hi @hibros334,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your HP Stream 11.6" Laptop is powering on but the screen remains black and it doesn’t display anything on an external TV via HDMI, this could indicate a hardware or software issue. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the charger and remove any external devices (USB drives, etc.).
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15-30 seconds to perform a hard reset and drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the charger, but do not reconnect any external devices yet.
  • Try turning the laptop on again and check if the display comes back.

2. Test the External Display (TV) Again:

  • Make sure the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
  • Try a different HDMI cable if possible.
  • Once connected, press Windows Key + P to cycle through the display modes (such as Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only). This might help if the laptop isn't automatically switching to the external display.

3. Check for Signs of Life:

  • Look for any signs that the laptop is turning on, such as:
    • The power LED or charging light turning on.
    • The fan or internal components making noise.
    • The Caps Lock key light blinking (indicating an error code, which could help with diagnosis).
  • If you hear the fan spinning but still get no display, it may point to an issue with the laptop’s display or a deeper internal hardware issue.

4. BIOS or Hardware Issues:

  • Try resetting the BIOS if you suspect a BIOS issue:
    1. Turn off the laptop.
    2. Press and hold the Windows key + B and then press the Power button for a few seconds.
    3. Release the power button but keep holding the Windows + B keys for a few more seconds.
    4. If the BIOS recovery screen appears, follow the instructions to reset the BIOS.
  • If the laptop doesn't boot to the BIOS recovery, it might indicate a deeper hardware issue.

5. Check for Power or Charging Issues:

  • Ensure the charger and charging port are functioning correctly:
    • Try using a different charger if available.
    • Check if the charging light turns on when the charger is plugged in.
  • If the laptop's battery is dead or malfunctioning, it might prevent the screen from turning on.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @hibros334,

Please find the remaining steps below.

6. Try Booting into Safe Mode:

  • If the screen remains black but you think the system is booting, try restarting in Safe Mode:
    1. Turn off the laptop.
    2. Turn it on and immediately start pressing the F8 or Shift + F8 keys repeatedly.
    3. If successful, this should bring up the boot options, where you can select Safe Mode.
  • If Safe Mode works, it could indicate a driver or software issue.

7. Check for Hardware Failure:

  • If you’ve tried the steps above and the screen is still not turning on, the issue may be related to:
    • A failed internal display or display cable.
    • A malfunctioning motherboard or GPU.
    • In this case, contacting HP support or taking the laptop to a technician for a hardware diagnosis would be the next step.

8. Clear CMOS (Battery Reset):

  • Some laptops have a small button or key combination to clear the CMOS (reset BIOS settings). Consult the user manual to see if your model has this feature.

9. Reinstall Windows (if possible):

  • If you are able to see the screen briefly during startup or via an external display and suspect a software issue, you could attempt to reinstall or repair Windows using a bootable USB drive.

If these steps don't work and there's no display on either the built-in screen or external monitor, it may indicate a hardware failure, such as a faulty screen, display cable, or motherboard. In that case, contact phone support for repair options.
