So i bought this laptop around a day ago when i first plugged it in charged it etc.. i had to press f10 just to get it to turn on weird but no problem but after use i Turn it off though windows and close it i left it for around 30 mins or longer after i came back to try to use it i press the power button and nothing no lights no noise no fan no display i tried plugging it in with a hp charger nothing still so i unplug the batter from motherboard and plug it back in press the power button and nothing then i plug it in again and press the power button and it turns on, i have no clue what is causing this issue and it works perfectly except for this error i ran the F2 full diagnostic and came back good. i have tried HP support assist it says its up do date. when first updated it it looked to have done a bios update but did not check. it does it when the red charging or white fully charged light on the side goes away usally when the lid is closed and off for a time. EDIT: it keeps doing it if it is unplugged closed and left for a bit it does this and cant turn it back on. In the bios system log it has codes 0502 0502 again. And 0021

@extremedeaht23, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
Based on your description, it seems your laptop is experiencing a power initialization issue that may be related to:

  • CMOS/BIOS settings or corruption
  • Battery or power delivery inconsistencies
  • Firmware or embedded controller (EC) issues

Here’s a structured approach to resolve this:

Perform a Hard Reset

This clears residual electrical charge and resets the embedded controller.

  • Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and charger.
  • Try powering on the laptop.

For non-removable batteries, just hold the power button for 15–20 seconds with the charger unplugged.

Update BIOS and Embedded Controller Firmware

Even if HP Support Assistant says you're up to date, manually updating the BIOS can resolve deep-seated power issues.

Check BIOS System Logs

You mentioned error codes 0502 and 0021. These typically relate to:

  • 0502 – EC (Embedded Controller) reset or failure
  • 0021 – CMOS checksum error or RTC (Real-Time Clock) issue

To address this:

  • Enter BIOS (F10 at startup).
  • Look for an option to Reset BIOS to Default or Load Setup Defaults.
  • Save and exit.

Disable Fast Startup (Windows)

Sometimes Windows Fast Startup interferes with proper shutdown and power-on cycles.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save changes and restart.

Battery Health Check

Even if diagnostics passed, try this:

  • Run the HP Battery Check via HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • If the battery is removable, test the system with only AC power (battery removed).
  • If the issue disappears, the battery may be faulty.

CMOS Battery Check (Advanced)

If the issue persists and you're comfortable opening the laptop:

  • Check the CMOS battery on the motherboard.
  • If it's loose or depleted, it can cause startup issues.
  • Replace it with a compatible CR2032 battery if needed.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

So for the hard reset that will get the computer on but I still can’t shut it off wait a little bit and turn it on. On HPs website I can’t find any bios drivers for this laptop I searched it with serial and product number and found the laptop but no bios update. I did the load setup defaults and no luck I did not try windows fast shutdown I tried it a little bit ago but no luck either still can’t shut it down and turn it on without a battery I plugged it in turned it on the power button light is on but no display for the cmos battery I can’t find it in any video or in the manual so I don’t know where it is. the bios version is F.31-04/24/2025  the embedded controller version is 17.40 and I don’t know if that’s updated or how to update. Thanks for the reply and the help.
