When I boot my notebook, it runs fine for a few minutes, then it starts to lock itself up a few times, then it turns off. If I do a hard reset during this, it fixes itself until I start the next session

I ran a short UEFI test and got : 
SMART HDD/SSD: FAIL GLGG6M-C1TD66-XD7WXF-60CL03

DST HDD/SSD: FAIL  GLGG6M-C1TD66-XD7WXF-60UU03

 

And in the Support Assistant, I found out that I didn't download:

An important firmware update for the SSD unit is available.

That is 10 months old

Hi,

The UEFI results are the most important part here:

  • SMART HDD/SSD: FAIL
  • DST HDD/SSD: FAIL

Those two failures strongly indicate that the internal drive is failing or has already become unreliable. The lockups, shutdowns, slow behavior, and boot problems are consistent with a failing HDD/SSD.

I would not try the SSD firmware update first while the drive is already failing. Firmware updates should only be done on a stable system, and if the drive fails during the update, the data may become harder to recover.

My recommendation:

  1. Back up your important files immediately.
  2. Do not run more repair tools, resets, or firmware updates before backing up.
  3. If Windows still boots, copy your data to an external drive as soon as possible.
  4. If Windows is unstable, remove the drive and connect it to another computer using a USB adapter/enclosure to copy the files.
  5. Replace the failing HDD/SSD.
  6. Reinstall Windows or use HP Cloud Recovery after the new drive is installed.

HP says that if a component fails HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, you should write down the 24-digit Failure ID and provide it to HP Support. Your Failure IDs should be given to HP if the laptop is under warranty or if you open a service case:

After installing a new drive, you can reinstall Windows or use HP Cloud Recovery if your model supports it:

In short, this is no longer just an update issue. The drive has failed HP storage diagnostics, so the safest path is backup first, then replace the drive.
