@mageng, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on your description, your HP computer shows "Press ESC" during startup and then shuts down unexpectedly after some minutes of use. That usually points to hardware or firmware-level issues, especially related to:
BIOS or Firmware Warning
The “Press ESC to enter Startup Menu” is a normal message during POST (Power-On Self-Test), but if it stays longer than a second or two, or appears with other warnings, that suggests:
- BIOS might be corrupted or outdated.
- Boot drive (HDD/SSD) may be failing or disconnected.
- A hardware component might be unstable (RAM, battery, etc.).
Overheating / Thermal Shutdown
If it shuts down after a few minutes, it could be overheating.Check for:
- Loud fan noise or no fan noise at all.
- Hot bottom/base of the laptop.
- Dust buildup in vents.
- Thermal paste dried up (on older models).
Try this:
- Boot into BIOS (Press F10 during startup).
- Let it stay idle for 10–15 minutes — if it shuts down in BIOS, it's definitely a hardware or thermal issue.
RAM or Hard Drive Issues
- Loose or failing RAM can cause boot problems or random shutdowns.
- Hard drive errors can cause unstable behavior or slow boots.
You can do:
- Tap F2 repeatedly during startup to enter HP’s built-in diagnostics.
- Run “Memory Test” and “Hard Drive Test”.
Battery or Power Supply Fault
- A weak battery or faulty charging circuit can cause random shutdowns.
- Try using the laptop with the battery removed (if removable) and just the charger.
What You Can Try:
- Enter BIOS (F10 at boot) → Reset BIOS to default settings.
- Run HP Diagnostics (F2 at boot) → Test RAM and Storage.
- Clean Inside → Especially if it’s been a while (dust in fan/vents).
- Update BIOS → If the system stays on long enough.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
