How to know when  i need to purchase a new battery for my 3 year old HP lap?

You need to run a full diagnostic on the battery so we can see the specs on how much life the battery has left. 

 

HP Notebook PCs - Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows) | HP® Customer Support

 

If you can, please post the advanced results so we can diagnose. 3 years is about average life of a battery so very likely you need a new one. This is an external clip-in battery so easy to replace and no problem finding one on amazon or ebay. HP will no longer carry it.
