HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows v2.7.2.0 , 15-ch002nc , 15-ch005na

I have

HP Spectre x360 15-ch002nc

HP Spectre x360 15-ch005na

Both with most recent BIOS F.38  (2023-01-06)
https://support.hp.com/cz-cs/product/details/hp-spectre-15-ch000-x360-convertible-pc/model/21296781?...

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows v2.7.2.0 (https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/hp-pc-hardware-diagnostics) wrongly detects need of BIOS update. It happens everytime after clear installation of HW Diag tool. I noted it about 4-times as I serviced notebooks and reinstall Win11 multiple-times.

+ Detection of BIOS takes for about multiple minutes which seems that it's not successful in detection of BIOS at all, so it only meechanically offers BIOS update which is not relevant.

When request to update BIOS is shown, there is even no basic information:
1) what BIOS version was detected
2) what is the newest version of BIOS

Seems that BIOS update part of app was not debugged for these older laptops.

(please, write +1 if you registered same behaviour)

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

To troubleshoot the issue where HP PC Hardware Diagnostics is incorrectly flagging the need for a BIOS update on your HP Spectre x360 15-ch002nc and 15-ch005na, let's break it down into some steps:

Confirm BIOS Version Directly

Start by manually verifying the current BIOS version from the BIOS setup (since the diagnostic tool might not be properly detecting it):

  • Reboot the system.

  • As soon as the HP logo appears, press F10 to enter the BIOS setup.

  • Look for BIOS version or Firmware Version in the system information tab or main page of the BIOS.

  • Check if it matches F.38 (2023-01-06), or if there’s a newer version available (you can also check the HP support page for the latest release).

Check System's HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Tool Version

Ensure that you are running the latest version of the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool:

  • Go to Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.

  • Make sure the version is v2.7.2.0, or check HP's download page for updates.

  • If there’s a newer version available, update the tool and check again for the error.

Check BIOS Detection in Diagnostic Tool

Since the detection process takes minutes and doesn't show the version information, it suggests the tool is not reading the BIOS correctly.

  • Run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and watch the BIOS detection process closely.

    • If it takes too long to detect, there might be an underlying issue, like a problem with your system’s firmware or configuration.

Run Diagnostics from Outside Windows (UEFI)

You can run the diagnostics from the UEFI environment, which might avoid interference from the operating system:

  • Turn off the laptop.

  • Press and hold the Esc key while turning it on to bring up the Startup Menu.

  • Press F2 to run the diagnostics outside of Windows.

  • Check for any BIOS-related errors or misdetections.

Clear TPM and Reset BIOS Settings

Sometimes, BIOS misdetection can be related to configuration issues or TPM errors:

  • Reset the BIOS settings to defaults:

    • Enter BIOS using F10.

    • Find the Restore Defaults or Reset to Default option.

    • Save and exit.

  • Clear TPM:

    • In BIOS, go to the Security tab.

    • Find the Clear TPM option and enable it.

    • Reboot the system.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
