My hard drive is failing. I'd really like to upgrade to a SSD. I've tried this on another HP laptop before, but it turned out I had to have the exact same drive configuration and such to be able to restore the OS for some reason. Just wondering if this is the same for this laptop, or if I have a chance to make it work?

Upgrading to a 2.5" 3D NAND SATA SSD will work and you will experience a noticeable performance boost.

There is AFAIK, no SSD slot present on the system board for a more modern M.2 SSD.

Will I have issues restoring OS? I had a HP 15-b011nr that I had to have same drive size, same brand, etc to partition the exact same way, etc in order to replace the drive.

As long as the replacement HDD or SSD is the same capacity or greater there won't be a problem.

Cloning the old drive to the new storage drive in a enclosure or using HP Cloud recovery to a newly installed empty drive  will take care of those issues that you describe.

The existing hdd is shot and no longer boots. Is there still a way to restore?

@HemiMoparGuy

You do have options.

You can still install an upgraded storage device, perhaps the SSD  you asked about and use the HP Cloud recovery to return the notebook to a useful state with better performance than it was delivered with.

As far as your data goes, you could pay a data recovery specialist to attempt to recover your data.

You could send the original HDD to a place with reasonable rate and good reputation, such as https://northridgefix.com/.

I do hope you did have an external backup of your data.

It is not such a great method to get a question answered by hijacking someone else's thread. I will move your question to an original thread where you will be the original author.

I noticed the drive failing, so I got things backed up...lost very very little data. Just worried about OS recovery. How does one initiate said cloud recovery?

I took a closer look at your notebook's generation and see that HP Cloud recovery is not applicable.
However, there are options.

The simplest way to do this is by performing a clean installation of Windows 11 on your laptop's  newly installed SSD.

Windows 11 installation media creation web document

https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

With a new SSD installed and a Windows 11 installation USB flash drive (8-32 GB capacity) you can boot to it and install Windows 11.
You will need to skip the part where it asks for the activation key.

Windows 11 will automatically install most of the required drivers during installation and setup.

Your laptop's driver page

Your laptop's suport portal

Microsoft's Windows licensing is kept on servers, so once the newly installed OS is booted and online it will self activate.
