OMEN MAX 16 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-ak0000 (A4UW9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I'm having an issue where, if I hold the Space key, the keys Q, W, E, R, A, S, D, and F don't register at all. Their input is completely ignored, which makes it impossible to use certain key combinations.

I've already tried uninstalling the keyboard driver through Device Manager, updating the drivers through HP Support Assistant, and updating the BIOS to the latest version, but the issue persists.

I also ran the System Extensive Test using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tool, and all components passed successfully. However, the problem is still present even during the built-in Keyboard Test.

The laptop is brand new, so there hasn't been any liquid spilled on it or any physical damage.

Any tips to fix will be appreciated!20260801_180006.jpg20260801_180006.jpg

Hi @Robu_Felix

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for the detailed information and the diagnostic image.

We understand the concern. Since the issue occurs not only in Windows but also during the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Keyboard Test, and you have already updated the BIOS, updated drivers, and reinstalled the keyboard driver, this helps narrow the scope significantly.

The System Extensive Test screenshot shows all major hardware components passing successfully. However, the fact that the specific key combinations fail during the Keyboard Test is an important observation.

Please try the following recommended checks:

Test with an External USB Keyboard

  • Connect a USB keyboard.
  • Hold the Space bar and press Q, W, E, R, A, S, D, and F.
  • If all combinations work correctly on the external keyboard, the behavior is isolated to the built-in keyboard.

Check Keyboard Behavior in BIOS

  • Restart the notebook and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate using the keyboard and test whether the affected key combinations respond consistently.
  • This helps determine whether the behavior exists outside the operating system environment.

Run Individual Keyboard Component Tests

  • Restart the PC and tap F2 repeatedly.
  • Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests > Keyboard.
  • Test the affected keys individually and then while holding the Space bar.
  • Note any keys that do not register or are reported as failed.

Load BIOS Defaults

  • Enter BIOS Setup using F10.
  • Select Restore Defaults or Setup Defaults.
  • Save changes and restart the PC.
  • Retest the keyboard behavior.

Check for Keyboard Matrix Limitations

  • Some key combinations can be affected by keyboard matrix design or key rollover limitations.
  • However, on a new HP notebook, if the affected combinations consistently fail during the HP Keyboard Test itself, the keyboard should be examined further through diagnostics to confirm normal operation.

Based on the information provided, the most significant detail is that the same behavior occurs within the HP Hardware Diagnostics Keyboard Test. That indicates the issue is present outside the Windows keyboard driver environment and warrants close attention to the keyboard's hardware-level input detection.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Regards,

Hello,

First of all, thank you for your reply!

  • I tested the key combinations using a HyperX Alloy Core RGB external keyboard, and they work correctly there.
  • I also ran the Keyboard Test, as shown in the attached screenshot, and unfortunately the problem still persists.
  • Additionally, I restored the BIOS to its default settings, but that didn't help either.
  • I also made sure that both Sticky Keys and Filter Keys are disabled.

Any additional help is appreciated!20260803_150702.jpg20260803_150702.jpg
