Since the cost is not a factor for me, I am going to give it a try.

I know it's been over a year since this post was placed but you can now buy a unit that powers & adapts a range of high end desktop gpu's & will upgrade the graphics by plugging into the laptops Express Port. They all have (Sandy bridge Elitebooks & later) physical Express ports on the units left side and you can MASSIVELY increase the laptops' graphics capability.

Not entirely true...expresscard ports are not found on laptops made in the last 3-4 years. HP now makes an eGPU dock but it plugs into USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port which only the most recent laptops will have.
