Hi,
I've been trying to figure out how to reduce fan noise under heavy load (it's very noisy then) on my zbook power g9. I tried to update the BIOS, but the option of fan control is still unavailable.
Is there any third-party app, that would allow me to do so?
thanks

Hello kayakkielbasa.

The only 3rd party tool that can be used to control the fans on laptops is Notebook Fan Control, which is basically a GUI interface for a service that directly writes to the registers controlling the fan speeds. Unfortunately, no one has been able -to my knowledge- to get it to work on Elitebook firmware with Alder Lake CPUs and higher. ZBooks are basically high power top-tier Elitebooks. I have been able to get NBFC to work on a G9 Probook, but the BIOS they use is completely different. If you want to take a shot at it, read this discussion and open any links contained: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/hp-elitebook-840-G6-fan-speed/t....

It's worth mentioning that fan noise when a system is fully loaded is not really a problem. If you manage to lower the fan speeds, you will just force the laptop to also become slower since temps are inevitably going to rise and HP workstations have various throttling schemes that are used to protect the motherboard from overheating. The real problem is high fan speeds when the system is idle, and this is what most people use NBFC for.

Hi.
Under idling, the laptop is very quiet. I can't even hear it.
The real problem is when I start rendering i.e. in 3ds Max, the sound becomes similar to the starting jet, it's really noisy and unpleasant. I used to have a ThinkPad in the past, and it was MUCH quieter under load.
It's really strange that I'm not able to reduce fan speed in ANY way.

I'm certain there is a thermal headroom that would permit reducing fan RPMs without impacting performance.

Why is no one from HP technical support willing to speak up about this and no one can give a clear answer on this matter?
