Out of interest are you left handed? I am righ handed and ifgured that maybe, I was opening/closing the screen more often on the right side...

I'm right handed

I am right handed and the hinge that it got broken is the right one. However, most of the times, I use the top middle area to close the lid, so perhaps that's not the reason.

I have an HP Envy 17 inch with the same right hinge issues. It worked very hard and pulled 2 of the 3 grommets out of the plastic frame. I took off the bottom and got a bit of lube in the hinge. It works a little easier but will not last with only 1 screw holding that hinge. This is my 7th HP computer. I want it fixed. This computer has been babied since it was new and I paid almost $1,000.00 for it. This is a common issue for HP laptops, and I feel it should be repaired through a recall. I tried to contact HP and cannot find any way to contact them.

my envy did the same thing!  where can i get parts to fix it?  This is a pretty common problem, i would think that HP would want to stand by their product, and fix this issue for free.  Instead I will pay have to pay for parts, and fix it myself.  This is not good business
