I have an EliteBook 840 G5 notebook with 16GB RAM of type SK Hynix DDR4 2400 SODIMM. I have the following questions,
- If I have to add an additional 16GB RAM module, should it also be of the same make i.e. Hynix
- Should the additional RAM also be 2400 or can I add the second module of 2666 or 3200 etc. Does mixing frequencies work or does it cause issues?
- For the motherboard on this notebook, what is the highest frequency and RAM type supported?
- Will I get major difference in performance if I replace my 2400 module with 2 modules of 2666 or higher

Your HP EliteBook 840 G5 Notebook PC, depending on whether you got a 7th gen Intel processor installed (such as an i5-7300U) can be fitted with up to 2 x 16GB of DDR4 2133 MHz RAM, or if you got an 8th gen Intel processor installed (such as an i7-8550U), can be fitted with 2 x 16GB of 2400 MHz RAM.
I would strongly recommend using identical RAM: same brand, model, speed and capacity. Mixing different RAM, especially with different RAM speeds, will affect RAM performance.
1.) I would strongly recommend to purchase an identical SK Hynix DDR4 SODIMM RAM stick -or at least a 16GB DDR4 PC4-19200, 2400 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, SODIMM, 260-pin RAM stick.
2.) Yes, use identical RAM speed: depending on your processor, the fastest any RAM will run on your system is either 2133 MHz (7th gen) or 2400 MHz (8th gen) anyway.
3.) See above.
4.) No.
Hope this was helpful.

Thanks. The processor is Intel i7 8550U. As you mentioned, the spec says that memory module with 2400 is compatible. However when I lookup Crucial's website for compatible RAM, it shows even the 3200 module. That is why I am confused
Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM
https://www.crucial.in/memory/ddr4/ct16g4sfra32a/ct18652921
Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM

Yes, you can install 3200 MHz RAM, but it will down throttle to 2400 MHz, without any benefits over 2400 MHz RAM. Crucial would like to sell you their RAM, and since the 3200 MHz RAM is compatible, is why they advertise it.
