HP Pavilion 15-cw0989na
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi all I bought a second hand HP Pavilion 15-cw0989na and I have found that the webcam doesn't work. It's not detected at all and doesn't appear in Device Manager. I've followed all the usual guidance on making sure the windows privacy settings are correct but no joy. In addition I have.....

1. Removed the webcam and connected it to another HP laptop. It works fine.

2. Tried the webcam from the other laptop in my one. Nothing.

3. Replaced the flat cable that connects both the webcam and the screen to the motherboard. Still nothing.

4. Done a full wipe and a clean install of Windows. Still nothing.

I can see no physical privacy switch, nor is there a 'camera on/off' function key on the keyboard. I couldn't see any setting in the BIOS either.

I'm starting to think the motherboard is faulty. Before I give up does anyone have any good ideas?

Thank you

Dave

Hi @Davlaw2000,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you so much for sharing the details, and I'm sorry to hear you're facing this issue. It must be frustrating. Before we dive into troubleshooting steps, could you please clarify which webcam you're referring to?

Is it an external webcam that you’ve connected separately, or are you referring to the built-in webcam that comes with your PC?

I ask because the built-in (internal) webcam is physically integrated into your laptop; it’s not something you can unplug or move around like a plug-and-play device. Understanding this will help me better picture what you're experiencing and guide you more accurately.

Once I have a clearer sense of your setup, I’ll do my best to walk you through the right solution.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hello Vikram I am referring to the built-in webcam that sits above the screen, in the centre.  I'm not sure I agree with your statement that it cannot be removed and replaced. I have done that. You just remove the bezel and disconnect it. As I said earlier I have replaced it with a similar unit from another HP laptop but it made no difference. I also tested the webcam by connecting it to the other HP laptop and it worked fine.  My current conclusion is that it's a fault on the motherboard.

Thank you for your help so far.
