Hello, I installed the HP Programmable Key but it doesn't work. Adding any type of action doesn't save it, and when attempting to add an application, I get "Could not get application list. Please make sure Hotkey Service is running or contact System Administrator."

When I press the programmable key (F12), it uses the System Events Utility to prompt me to select either OMEN Gaming Hub or myHP. I don't want either, I want to use the HP Programmable Key to setup custom shortcuts.

I also can't find the Hotkey Service anywhere.

Thanks

Hi @danzopa85,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the HP Programmable Key isn't functioning properly because the Hotkey Service is either missing or not running. Here are a few steps you can try:

  1. Check if HP Hotkey Support is Installed
    • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and go to the Services tab.
    • Look for HP Hotkey UWP Service or HP Hotkey Support.
    • If it's missing, you'll need to install it.

  2. Reinstall HP Hotkey Support
    • Visit the HP Support Community and check if your laptop model has a downloadable Hotkey Service.
    • Alternatively, you can try installing HP System Event Utility from the Microsoft Store, as some users have reported success with it.

  3. Manually Start the Hotkey Service
    • Open Run (Win + R), type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Look for HP Hotkey UWP Service.
    • If found, right-click it, go to Properties, and set Startup Type to Automatic.
    • Restart your laptop and check if the Programmable Key works.

  4. Try an Alternative Installation Method
    • Some users have fixed similar issues by downloading the HP Hotkey Support driver manually from this link.
    • Install it, restart your laptop, and test the Programmable Key again.

If none of these steps work, HP might need to update the software for better compatibility. Let me know how it goes!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
