HP Elite x360 1040 14 inch G11 2-in-1 Notebook PC IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi!

I'm trying to hook up an eGPU to my HP elite X360 1040 11th gen 2-in-1 notbook pc, I have turned off DMA protection and core isolation to no avail. the event log shows that the eGPU is "surprise removed from bus" milliseconds after hot-plugging, when looking at the device manager, it shows up for a moment but then disappears again, suggesting it is recognised but then kicked due to some security setting which I don't for some reason have access to. Cold booting with the eGPU connected doesn't help.

It seems I can't change the security setting of the thunderbolt connection either. I only have the option of thunderbolt mode on or off.. Why is that, and do anyone have a possible fix?

The eGPU functions normally on other PC's, like my friends lenovo thinkpad, so GPU faults are luckily ruled out.

Hi @Freddyfix,

Connecting an eGPU (external graphics processing unit) to your HP Elite x360 1040 G11 notebook can offer enhanced graphical performance, but there can be challenges, especially related to compatibility and configuration. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Verify Compatibility:

    • Ensure that both the eGPU and your HP Elite x360 support Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, which is typically required for eGPU setups.
  2. Check Thunderbolt Settings:

    • Access the BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure that Thunderbolt support is fully enabled.
    • Make sure the Thunderbolt security level is set appropriately. Sometimes setting it to 'No Security' can help with eGPU recognition.
  3. Driver Installation:

    • Install the latest drivers for your eGPU from both the eGPU manufacturer and the GPU chip manufacturer (like NVIDIA or AMD).
  4. BIOS and Firmware Updates:

    • Ensure that your laptop’s BIOS, Thunderbolt software, and firmware are updated to the latest versions. You can find updates on the HP Support website.
  5. Thunderbolt Software:

    • Make sure you have the most recent Thunderbolt Control Center or Thunderbolt Software installed. This facilitates the management of connected Thunderbolt devices.
  6. Power Supply:

    • Confirm that the eGPU is properly connected to its power supply, as insufficient power can cause connection issues.
  7. Connection Process:

    • Try connecting the eGPU while the laptop is off, and then boot with the eGPU connected. This is sometimes more reliable than hot-plugging.
  8. Security Software:

    • Some security features or software might interfere with the operation of peripherals. Temporarily disable any third-party security software to see if it resolves the issue.
  9. Event Viewer Logs:

    • Review the Windows Event Viewer for specific error messages that could provide more insight into why the eGPU is being removed.

I'm an HP Employee.
