I'm using excel on a new laptop for the first time and I'm having a genuine struggle with using the keyboard given that I'm used to it on this HP Elitebook. 

I would appreciate any help given for shortcuts to type * faster.

There are SO many Elitebook models --

 

The model in the example was chosen somewhat at random.

The solution applies to your system if your computer includes a Num Lock key on the keyboard.

 

Test model

The Num Lock key is a toggle - each press/release of the key switches the Num Lock ON or OFF

Switch on the Numeric keyboard (Num Lock on)

 

Type using the Alt key and the numbers on the Numeric Keyboard
