Hp compaq Presario CQ60
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Earlier l temporarily used a 19.5V 4.74A hp replacement adapter and it charged my laptop beyond 50% until l got its right adapter.

When l charged with the right adapter 19V 4.74A it failed to charge beyond 50%. On replacement with a new compatible battery it charged beyond 50%. I recently run a HPBC but it had no issues with the battery. I don't know whether my battery is damaged or there is something wrong because it used to charge beyond 50%.

I need assurance about this.

Hi@Angello,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that you have a Hp Compaq Presario CQ60x and the battery charges till 50% and then stops. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

Did any software changes or updates happen on your laptop after which the battery stopped charging at 70%?

While you respond to that, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

NOTE: You may skip any steps that have been performed by you already.

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
  • Power ON the laptop.

Now let us uninstall the battery drivers and reinstall them. The following steps will help:

  • Open the device manager.
  • Expand "Batteries". Right click on the ACPI battery drivers and select uninstall. If there are multiple entries of the ACPI battery drivers then uninstall them all.
  • Close the device manager.Restart the laptop.
  • The Windows operating system will reinstall the battery drivers while restarting.

It is a good idea to download and run a BIOS update for your laptop via this link. The charger must be connected until the BIOS update is complete to avoid any power interruptions due to battery draining out.

Post a successful BIOS update,  you may check if the battery charges fully. If not then please perform the steps as described in detail in this HP document. These steps help in testing and calibrating the battery.

NOTE: Please skip the steps mentioned in "Test and calibrate the battery using HP Support Assistant".

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted.

If you have the original battery installed I am not surprised that it would not charge beyond 50%.

The Hp Compaq Presario CQ60 series is from the Microsoft Vista era and that was quite some time ago. HP Battery Checks are not always accurate. in System information from the F1 key at startup you should be able to seee the born on date fopr the battery.

The battery has very likely  been installed more than five years.  Five+ years is likely to be nearing the end of the main battery service life, expeciall is used in regions where the ambient temperature is quite high.

I read your advice and also clicked your link for updating the BIOS. But apparently on complete download of the file the computer system is communicating that it may harm the computer.

So what should I do.

Okay. So what is the best suggestion or advice you can give me.

HP Recommended

Power on the notebook and immediately tap the F1 key to access System Information.

In the list of data you should see a born on date.

That date will let you know how old the battery is.

Your notebook's BIOS is not the more recent UEFI type, so I do not recommend updating the BIOS.

UEFI BIOS type can be safely updated while the old school BIOS type can easily be bricked by a BIOS update.

Hi@erico,

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue, and in order to fix this issue,  your computer needs to be serviced.  As we have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now,

As this is a hardware issue, I'd suggest youContact HPin your region regarding the service options for your computer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.
