Is it possible to get a split display on my HP 15DY1051WM laptop

I have  an HP Laptop, Model Number 15DY1051WM and want to know if I can get a USB to HDMI adapter and get a true split (dual) screen where I can display something I'm working on, that will be different than what I'm displaying on my laptops built in screen?  I know in a PC tower situation, my desktops have video cards that allow the ability to display this.  I'd be wiling to add whatever hardware I need to do this, but it's not clear to me as far as what I need.  I do see the USB to HDMI adapters, which would allow me to hook up and external HDMI Monitor but no reason to do this if I'm just going to get the same display.
