Keyboard Backlight Not Working on HP Laptop

Dear HP Support Team,

I am experiencing an issue with my HP laptop’s keyboard backlight. The backlit function is not working, even when I try using the designated function keys and adjusting the settings.

Steps I have already tried:

  1. Used the Fn + backlight key combination.

  2. Adjusted power settings related to keyboard backlight.                                                                                             Unfortunately, the issue persists. I would appreciate your assistance in diagnosing and resolving this problem. Please let me know if you need any additional information from my side.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

@RaviGiri007, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If you're facing issues with the keyboard backlight not functioning on your HP OMEN 16.1-inch Gaming Laptop, here are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to address the problem:

Ensure the Keyboard Is Backlit:

  • Not all HP laptops feature a backlit keyboard. Verify if your specific model is equipped with this feature by checking the product specifications on

Verify Key Functionality:

  • Identify the correct function key (usually f4 or f5) paired with the Fn key that controls the backlight. Use this combination to toggle the backlight.

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and enter BIOS settings. Navigate to the System Configuration tab and ensure that Action Keys Mode is enabled. This allows function keys to work correctly without the need for Fn.
  • While in BIOS, also check if there is a setting for backlight timeout under Built-in Device Options.

Cable and Connection Check:

  • Although this step is typically for technicians, ensure that the flex cables of the keyboard are intact, properly inserted, and securely connected to the system board.

Driver and BIOS Updates:

  • Update your system's BIOS and keyboard drivers as necessary from the HP Support website.

Conduct Diagnostics:

  • Utilize the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to isolate hardware issues from software issues.
  • Access this tool by pressing the F2 key during boot and selecting Component Tests.

Reseat Connections:

  • If possible and you are comfortable doing so, reseat the backlight cable if you suspect a loose connection.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
