Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for providing the complete product details. We understand that your Victus by HP 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop 15-fa1000 (9P833AV), model 15-fa1317TX, running Windows 11, is reaching approximately 100°C while gaming and then hibernating, and that this has happened repeatedly. We also noted that you have already cleaned the laptop and reapplied the thermal paste, so we will not ask you to repeat those steps.
Before proceeding further, we would like to check a few important details:
- Where is the notebook normally placed while gaming? Is it on a hard, flat surface such as a desk/table, or is it sometimes used on a bed, couch, lap, or another soft surface?
- Please check whether anything is blocking the air intake or exhaust vents while you are gaming.
- When the notebook becomes hot, can you hear both cooling fans operating?
- When you turn the notebook on, do you receive a System Fan (90B), System Fan (90A), System Fan Speed Failure (90F), or any other warning/error before Windows starts? HP documents these errors as being associated with the cooling or heat-removal system. If an error appears, please share a clear picture of the complete message. Please make sure that the serial number or other personal information is not visible.
- Have you already run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tests? If yes, please let us know which tests were run and whether they passed or failed.
Please run HP Hardware Diagnostics
Because the notebook is repeatedly shutting down or hibernating when it becomes extremely hot, the next step we recommend is testing the hardware rather than continuing to change Windows settings.
HP provides HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI specifically for testing hardware components. HP recommends starting with the Fast Test, and if no failure is detected while hardware symptoms continue, running the Extensive Test.
- Completely shut down the notebook.
- Turn the notebook on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
- When the Startup Menu appears, press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Run the available System Tests/Component Tests.
- If your diagnostics version provides a Fan/Thermal test, please run that as well. HP diagnostic documentation confirms that UEFI testing can include a fan-speed and thermal test.
- If a test fails, please make a note of the Failure ID and the component that failed.
Please do not post the notebook's serial number publicly.
If you receive a 90B or another fan-related startup error, please tell us exactly which error appears. For example, HP states that a System Fan (90B) message means the system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.
Once you have completed the F2 diagnostics, please reply with the test results/Failure ID, whether both fans appear to be operating, whether any 90B or other startup error appears, and whether the notebook is being used on a hard, flat surface with the vents unobstructed.
With those results, we can determine the appropriate next step without repeating the cleaning and thermal-paste work you have already completed.
Take care and have a good day.
I also have the same issue with my gaming laptop, where the temperature rises extremely high during gaming and causes the system to shut down or hibernate unexpectedly. It is frustrating because this interrupts gameplay and makes me concerned about whether the excessive heat could damage the hardware over time. Since you have already cleaned the laptop and reapplied the thermal paste but the problem still persists, I wonder if the issue could be related to the cooling fans, heatsink, airflow, or how the system manages CPU and GPU temperatures under heavy load.

Hi @kimkorton36,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I understand that your gaming laptop becomes extremely hot while gaming and then shuts down or enters hibernation unexpectedly.
Since you are reporting a similar issue on a different computer, please confirm:
- What is the exact HP laptop model and product number?
- What temperatures are the CPU and GPU reaching, and which application are you using to monitor them?
- Does the laptop display a System Fan 90B, 90A, 90F, or another warning when it starts?
- Do the cooling fans become loud or stop operating before the laptop shuts down?
- Is the laptop being used on a hard, flat surface with the air vents unobstructed?
- Have you already cleaned the vents, serviced the cooling system, or replaced the thermal paste?
Please run the HP hardware diagnostics:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Select System Tests, and then run the Fast Test.
- If the Fast Test passes but the overheating continues, run the Extensive Test.
- If available under Component Tests, run the fan or thermal test.
- If a test fails, note the failed component and the 24-digit Failure ID.
HP advises starting with the Fast Test and running the Extensive Test if the hardware symptoms continue without a detected failure. The UEFI diagnostics run outside Windows and can help isolate a hardware fault.
Until the cause is identified, please avoid prolonged gaming if the laptop continues reaching extreme temperatures or shutting down. Reply with the exact model, recorded CPU/GPU temperatures, any startup warnings, and the diagnostic results. Please do not post the laptop’s serial number publicly.
Take care and have a good day!
