Hi:
Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates that NVMe SSD's are supported.
On some notebooks the M.2 SSD does not show up in the BIOS, but you can install Windows on it.
Give it a try.
If you don't see it in Windows explorer, you have to initialize the drive, since they come unformatted.

Hi Paul,
I tried installing windows to M.2 SSD from bootable flash drive, but when I get to disk selection where it asks where do you want to install Windows the M.2 SSD is not listed as one of the drive. Also the m.2 is not showing up in Disk Management either. I tried reinstalling the m.2, but same results. What do I have to do?
Thanks!

Hi:
Sorry that the steps you took didn't work.
Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem could be.
The manual indicates that NVMe SSD's are supported, so it can be one of 4 things:
1. The drive you bought is defective.
2. The manual is wrong and only SATA SSD's are supported.
3. The M.2 slot may be disabled in the BIOS' security menu if such a setting exists.
4. The M.2 slot is dead.

Hi:
Normally the drive capacities listed in the service manual are just what HP offered in the model series, not the maximum capacity supported.
I'm thinking that would be an outside chance that a 500 GB NVMe drive won't work, where a 250 GB one would.
I suppose you could exchange it for a 250 GB and see what happens.

You're very welcome.
Hopefully it will work.
If not, the next thing to do (other than giving up) would be to try a SATA M.2 SSD.
You may as well get the 500 GB model, because if the 250 GB NVMe SSD doesn't work for some reason, it should support any capacity SATA SSD up to 2 TB.

Hi Paul,
I have ran into problem, I tried to login to my computer and I get a message saying bootable device not found and I have hard drive in the computer with the windows on it, first I thought it might be my hard drive was dead, but using SATA to USB cable I plugged my Hard disk into one of my family members computer and the hard disk popped up and it says healthy. Could it be the port on my computer that is causing the problem or do I need a new cable for my computer?
Thanks!

Hi:
Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem could be.
It's possible the hard drive cable has gone bad.
The hard drive cable is available using spare part number L19172-001 according to chapter 3, page 41 of the service manual.
The part is not orderable from HP, so you will have to find it on the secondary market.
HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts
I see some for sale on eBay...
