Hi for the past couple weeks my GPU doesnt seem to switch off which is causing my laptop to be much warmer when idle and the battery drains twice as fast.

According to the Omen gaming hub the GPU is inactive but the behavior of my laptop says otherwise. I use the gaming hubs overlay to keep my CPU and GPU temps at the top of my screen at all times the GPU temp would always be blank until actually being used.

Now the GPU temp is always showing and my idle temps are much higher than usual.

I've reinstalled windows thinking maybe theres some file in the background causing the issue but it's still happening.

Hi @Rikimaru

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. The GPU remaining active even when the Omen Gaming Hub shows it as inactive can lead to higher idle temperatures and faster battery drain.

Let’s go through some structured steps to help bring the system back to expected behavior:

Update Graphics Drivers

  • Open the HP App and check for updates.
  • Also update NVIDIA drivers directly through GeForce Experience or Device Manager.
  • Restart the system after updating.

Check Windows Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Ensure the selected plan is Balanced.
  • Under Change advanced power settings, expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Maximum power savings.

Configure NVIDIA Control Panel

  • Right-click on the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Under Manage 3D settings, set Preferred graphics processor to Auto-select.
  • For individual programs, ensure they are set to use Integrated graphics unless GPU acceleration is required.

Check Background Applications

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look for applications using GPU resources under the GPU Engine column.
  • Close or disable unnecessary apps that keep the GPU active.

Run Diagnose & Fix in HP App

  • Open the HP App.
  • Navigate to Support > Troubleshooting.
  • Run Diagnose & Fix to automatically detect and resolve hardware or driver conflicts.

BIOS and Firmware Updates

  • Open the HP App and check for BIOS or firmware updates.
  • Install if available, then restart the laptop.

By following these steps, the GPU should return to its normal idle behavior, reducing heat and improving battery life.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
