i can use samsung migration to do that. i did so to swap the HDD to an SDD.

Hello, I don't know this software. You can use it if you want to clone all your drive, but this option need to have a m.2 SSD from the same capacity (or higher) your SATA 2.5 drive; but I don't know if you want just migrate Windows files.

If I have been answer to your question please accept it as a solution 🙂

The Samsung Migration took was at one point packaged with Samsung Drives on a Mini DVD, along with samsung magician, however they now have a leaflet packaged with there SSDs. the leaflet points to two pieces of software that i now use when installing Samsung drives.

Samsung Migration tool can be used to move all data regardless of original drive max capacity to a Samsung SSD, so long as the used capacity does not exceed the capacity of the SSD.  case and point, this laptop was a 1TB HDD but i had only used up 68.4GB so i was able to migrate both the C: and 😧 (recovery)  drives from the 1TB to the Samsung 860 250GB. i now have 144GB free to do with what i want.

i plan on installing the M.2 SSD and using samsung migration again so i can store my personal documents on a drive can easily be removed and used on another system should the worst happen.

whie i could used a USB 3.0 external drive that is cumbersome.

samsung magician is used to automatically fine tune the drive using Samsungs in built options. it can also be used to test the drive for faults.
