HP 255 G8 and HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We have HP 255 G8 laptops (4L1R0UT#ABA) with HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2 docks (5TW13AA#AB).  We had to purchase the HP G2 4.5 mm and USB-C Dock Adapter for HP Laptops (6LX61UT) adapters to allow the use of two monitors and the laptops to charge properly through the docks.  All seems like it is working with one exception:  We cannot get the laptop to start up by pressing the power button on the dock.  To start the laptop, you must open the laptop, press the power button, and close the laptop.   In the quick specs document for these docks, it states that "Power button to turn on or wake the system, Wake-on LAN from warm and cold dock, Wake-on LAN from S4/S5, and MAC Address Pass-Through S0, S3, S4, S5 warm and cold dock features only function on HP or HP-supported notebooks."  This is an HP notebook, so we would assume the power on would work.  Is there something else we need to configure to make the power button turn on the laptop?

How do you connect the dock to your machine ?

We connect the HP G2 4.5 mm and USB-C Dock Adapter and the USB-C Cable from the dock together.  We then plug the 4.5 mm power adapter cable into the laptop's power adapter port and plug the USB-A cable from the HP G2 4.5 mm and USB-C Dock Adapter into one of the two USB-A ports near the power adapter.   At that point, we expected we could leave the laptop closed and press the power button on the dock to start up the laptop.  However, nothing happens when we press the dock's power button.

This is not going to work because you can't not charge machine using that way. You have to plug DIRECT USB-C port from machine to USB-C on the dock. By the way, from my reading HP 255 G8 laptop is not compatible with the dock. Please  check again as shown on the following document

When we plug the USB-C cable directly into the laptop, it does not pass video through to the dock because host PC does not support the DisplayPort™ Alt mode protocol through its USB-C port.  Had we known this, we would never have purchased these laptops.

Also, when the dock is connected to the laptop only using the USB-C cable to the USB-C port on the laptop, the laptop does NOT charge contrary to what you stated.  However, if we use the adapter HP G2 4.5 mm and USB-C Dock Adapter for HP Laptops - 6LX61UT as indicated on page 12 of the document you referenced, the displays connect to the dock do work AND the dock does charge the laptop.  Again, while it is not ideal, this setup works...except for the power button on the dock starting the laptop.

We are on our second dock model - both recommended by HP Sales and HP Support for the HP 255 G8 laptop - 4L1R0UT#ABA.  If anyone knows of another HP dock model that will work with this laptop, please make a recommendation.  We purchased 51 laptops and, so far, the best dock solution we have found is the 5TW13AA#ABA combined with the adapter 6LX61UT.
