how am I able to tell which slot this message is pointing out and even if I have to switch one? does that mean I have to have two new rams or just one new one in the failing slot?

Says right on the screen -- Bottom slot, left.
And yes, you have to open the case to replace the memory.
IF you are not comfortable doing that, then you will need to take it to a laptop repair facility and have them do it.

Hi,
The bottom slot should be the one closest to you when you open notebook. Anyway, you can try reseating the RAM and try one stick at a time just to make sure the RAM id really defective. So, place one RAM and try the PC and then use other RAM.
On page 34 of service manual, you can see the steps to replace the RAM
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05122652
If one module is defective you can just replace the one 4GB module. What you need is DDR4 2133MHz RAM, you can also use 2400MHz RAM.
Example of RAM

Hope it helps,
David
