HP Spectre x360 - 13-ae004na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My keyboard backlight does not turn on when I press the f5 key.

I've searched in bios for the backlight settings but can't see anything related to it.

Can anybody help?

It's possible that the issue is related to changing the operating system but I'm not certain. The original owner of my laptop upgraded to Windows 11 just before I bought it, and this caused a few issues, mainly that  the laptop wouldn't work in tablet mode. I reverted to Windows 10 and eventually got it working in tablet mode, but I can't get the backlight to go. I've tried another fresh install of Windows 10, but still no backlight.

The laptop is still in perfect condition so I think it's unlikely to be an internal hardware issue. I can't understand why there is no provision for changing the backlight settings in the bios.

Hi@Emver,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing Backlight issues with the HP Spectre X360 Laptop.

If your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, press the F5 or F4 (some models) key on the keyboard to turn the light on or off. It is necessary to press the Fn (function) key at the same time.

I have a few recommendations

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your reply Dilip_18.

My f5 key has the backlight symbol but nothing happens when I press it (or together with the fn key.)

My windows and HP support assistants are up to date and I've tried re-loading the latest keyboard drivers.

My bios version is AM1 F.35, 20/08/2021

In the BIOS Setup Utility the Action KeysMode is enabled.

But I still have no backlighting.

Can you help further please?

Hi@Emver,

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and effort.

Try doing Reset PC from windows and check if it works. If issue persists then It could be a hardware issue. As we have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now. I would request you to contact our HP Support Engineers and should be able to sort this out.
