HP Laptop PC 17z-ca300 CTO
Microsoft Windows 11

I've tried all of the basics (uninstall/reinstall, install old drivers [doesn't take], disable/enable, reinstalled Windows TWICE), but recently my touchpad has stopped working while in Windows. It DOES work in the BIOS screen, etc, however.  I have tried updating drivers, including optional updated in Windows update, and nothing solves it. I've tried all variations on enabling/disabling/uninstalling the touchpad.

ERROR in Device Manager:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

The device returned an invalid HID descriptor.

My laptop has no such sticker on it, sorry. And I bought it direct from HP. Is there another way to find it?

Ok yes I found it - and the number I provided is the full number. There are no other characters before or after it.

Hello @jasonklamm

(1) Download Microsoft CAB file:

CAB ELAN 31.21.24.2

(2) Locate downloaded file

032517c1-fa6b-4e62-9da6-540214b10376_ee4fded76e4be4ef6140134e1353fd527e463e96.cab

- rename downloaded cab file to elan.cab

( remember path where file is located ! )

(3) Extract file elan.cab using 7-zip

( remember path where extracted directory is located )

(4) Start windows <device manager>

- locate <touchpad device>

- right click <update driver>

- Select to locate the drivers locally on your PC.

- Browse among your folders.

- Open and install the .inf file

(5) Reboot

(6) Test

(7) Please report your results

Whenever I use this option it always tells me "the best drivers for your device are already installed," so this time I did "Let me pick from a list of available drivers" and then clicked "Have Disk." I navigated to the cab file and chose EPD.inf (there are three options, so I wasn't sure which to use) and I get this:

I went through with it and rebooted but it didn't work.

Hello @jasonklamm

The driver is wrong ... that was just an attempt.
